DIY Pin Board

As I mentioned in my previous posts, we've been in our house for a few years.  We're ready to mix things up a little bit, to give our home a little bit of updating without a big price tag.  This week's project centered around our hallway decor.

At our wedding we had guests sign picture frame mats, and hung those up in our hallway.  So many of the notes are so sweet and special.  It has been a blessing for us to walk by such encouraging words for the past six years.  But I have to be honest.  Some of them are a little bit depressing.  Notes from friends that are no longer together or notes from people who are no longer with us.  After a bit of thought, we opted to put those in storage and do something that's a little bit more reflective of our life today.

So this week, I created a pin board to showcase current pictures of our family and friends.  I used 30 minutes and $30, since I didn't end up getting a chance to do a project last week.  To create the pin board, I found a great tutorial here, I found a vision I liked here, and bought a cork board on Amazon.  I will freely admit that this project didn't quite go as I had planned.  The cork board wasn't quite deep enough for the nail head trim that I bought, so they nails poke through the back.  I had some foam board left over from M's birthday party, so I had to glue that to the back of the board to make sure that the nails didn't scratch up my walls.

After finishing the assembly process, I ordered some prints, bought some binder clips and push pins, and headed to my craft closet to make a few decorations for the board {I actually ended up making two boards, but each one cost around $25 all in}.

A few quick notes:

There are a few things I wish I had done differently on this project, so if you choose to embark on this fun little adventure, learn from my mistakes.
1) Consider buying a roll of nail head trim instead of using individual nails.  If you look closely at the bottom, the nails aren't perfectly straight.  It's hard to fix now, since the holes are already in the board, so I'll have to learn to live with it.  2) Buy a BIG board.  This one is 18 x 22 and I wish it was larger.  3) Give yourself some time to come up with cute decorations.  I tried hard to keep my time commitment to 30 minutes for decorations and upholstering the board, so I didn't get to do as many cute touches as I wish I had.  As I have more time, I'll be making some fun additions.

So here's the breakdown:

Cork board: $12.50 at Amazon.com
Fabric: $3.30 at Joann Fabrics
Nails: $9 at Joann Fabrics
Pictures: less than $1 at Walgreens
Other DIY decorations: Already had the supplies, no new cost

Total cost: $25.80 and 30 minutes.
